ATTACK Like a 5.0 (FAST Results)
Hey there, its your coach, Jordan Briones
Let me start with this: most players think they’re attacking but in reality, they’re just hitting hard.
There's a big difference.
If you want to attack like a 5.0, you need more than just power. You need timing, placement, and the right setup. In this post, we break down what separates elite attackers from average hitters and how you can start applying these strategies today.
1. It Starts with the Right Ball
The biggest mistake I see? Players try to force an attack off any ball they think is attackable. But if you're speeding up a low dink or a ball that's bouncing awkwardly, you're setting yourself up to lose.
A 5.0 player waits. They identify the dead ball, the floaty dink, the ball with no purpose. That’s when they strike. And when they do, it’s intentional, with topspin, and with a clear target in mind.
2. It’s Not Just Power. It’s Pressure.
When Ben Johns attacks, he’s not just swinging hard. He’s creating discomfort.
He hits to the paddle side hip, to the left shoulder, to the middle gap, places where even solid players struggle to counter. It’s not about going through someone, it’s about going around their comfort zone.
And here’s the kicker: the best attackers don’t just hit the ball hard. They use their legs, stay balanced, and follow through with control.
3. Prepare Your Body, Not Just Your Paddle
Great attacks start with great positioning. If your feet are stuck or you're leaning back, your shot loses bite.
In the video, we show how to load your legs, stay low, and transfer momentum into the shot. This gives your attack weight without having to over muscle the ball. The result? A shot that dips, drives, and demands a weak reply or none at all.
4. Know When to Reset
The best 5.0 attackers know when not to attack.
If the setup isn’t there then reset. Live to fight another ball. Sometimes the best offense is the next ball, not the current one.
That kind of patience? It’s what separates tournament winners from first round exits.
Final Thought
If you want fast results, stop swinging aimlessly. Start thinking like a 5.0.
Ask yourself:
-
Am I attacking the right ball?
-
Is my shot targeted and balanced?
-
Am I attacking to apply pressure, or just to hit hard?
The moment you shift from just “hitting hard” to attacking with purpose, everything changes.
You create pop ups. You take control.
You win more points.
Start training smarter today and attack like a 5.0
See you on the court,
Jordan Briones
